2nd Prize: Leiber GmbH

Presentation of the "Energy Efficiency Award 2008" at the WORLD ENERGY DIALOGUE on 22 April 2008

Energy recovery from industrial effluents.

When the sewage plant of Leiber GmbH in Bramsche was extended to twice its original capacity, the purification concept was examined and an anaerobic process selected. The newwastewater treatment plant uses much less electricity and chemicals and produces less waste. The biogas produced in the course of the wastewater purification is used in a CHP plant for the co-generation of electricity and heat.

Assessment
This project is an extremely successful example of an industry-specific, technically sophisticated solution resulting in very high energy and cost savings in small and mediumsized enterprises. 72 percent of the electricity required under the previous technology is saved with this method. The generation of electricity and heat in a CHP plant also makes further cost savings possible. The sewage plant has paid for itself within just a few years from the income received for electricity and heat provided to third parties.

More detailed information on the project can be found in the data sheet:  Energy recovery from industrial effluents.

Implemented energy efficiency measures

  • Integrated innovative wastewater purification technology which lowers energy consumption, the chemicals used and the waste produced.
  • Use of the biogas produced during wastewater purification in a CHP plant.
  • Input of the electricity produced in the CHP plant pursuant to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) into the local utility’s electricity supply network.
  • Use of the heat produced in the CHP plant for production and the wastewater treatment plant and to supply a neighbouring plant.
